Soon-to-be homeowners, Cheng and Sierra, have moved five times since they’ve been married and want their kids — eight-year-old ShingYing; four-year-old twins ChiaShi and ChiaLia; and three-year old YuShia — to have a more stable upbringing.

“I came from a family of 10, and Sierra came from a family of 12. It was tough for us as kids because we lived in homes that had two or three bedrooms, so we shared rooms with our siblings,” Cheng said. “My family lived in our first home for two decades, and Sierra’s family moved a lot during her childhood, which made it difficult for her to make new friends each time they moved.”

Thanks to home sponsors Evjue Foundation, and a number of local companies that came together to frame the home, Cheng and Sierra will achieve the stability they’ve always wanted and soon move in to their own Habitat for Humanity home in Sun Prairie. This will be Habitat’s 275th home built in Dane County. The home dedication will take place on Wednesday, June 20 at 4 p.m. at 247 Sweet Grass Drive. The public is invited to tour the home, enjoy refreshments and meet the family.

Prior to breaking ground on the construction site, more than 50 associates from Classic Custom Homes of Waunakee, Nonn's, RHD Plumbing, ABC Supply and Settlers bank, built the home frame in Classic Custom Home's parking lot last fall. The frame was then moved over to its permanent location in Sun Prairie.

“I’ve worked as an assembler for 12 years, and Sierra has a passion to work in the medical field. She recently graduated from Madison Area Technical College from the Medical Assistant program,” Cheng explained. “We feel that owning a home is like having a feeling of being safe. We want the best for our children, and we want to make sure that they will grow up healthy and feel safe in their own neighborhood. This is life changing for our family. We can finally have our “Home Sweet Home.”

During the home building process, Cheng and Sierra spent 375 hours building their home alongside Habitat volunteers on the construction site and took educational courses preparing the family for homeownership.
