How do I sign up to volunteer? You can talk to the Volunteer Manager, Megan Kenney, phone: 608/255-1549, ext. 104 email: Megan or sign up to volunteer on a construction site by using Volunteer Hub on our website.
Do I have to have construction experience to volunteer on a worksite? No experience in building is necessary to volunteer. Habitat will provide site supervisors and crew leaders to help you throughout your volunteer day. We only ask that you come with a positive attitude and willingness to learn!
When are construction workdays? Workdays are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays
What are your greatest volunteer needs? Our greatest volunteer needs include weekday construction volunteers and skilled help.
What if I’m signed up and I need to cancel? You can cancel by contacting Megan Kenney. Phone: 608/255-1549, ext. 104 email: mkenney@habitatdane.org or if signed up online you can remove yourself from the Volunteer Hub website.
What if I know someone who is building with Habitat (i.e. a Habitat homeowner)? Can I help build their home specifically? Yes, you must coordinate this with the homeowner that you know.
What about weather conditions? To learn about weather related cancellations, call the weather line at 255-1549 ext. 211. (Updated at 7:30 a.m. each workday)
How should I prepare for Wisconsin weather? Habitat works twelve months a year. Please dress smart for the weather. During the summer months we recommend light colored clothing, hats, and shorts. Bringing items that will help you be more comfortable during your work day is also a plus, like frozen water bottles, Gatorade, and a cool towel for your neck/head. During the winter months we try as much as possible to keep people inside. Inside does not always mean well heated. During cold months it is best to dress in warm layers with a water proof layer as your outer layer. No matter the season sturdy footwear is always recommended.
Do I need to bring my own tools to a worksite? No, everything that you need will be supplied. Volunteers may bring their own hand tools (work gloves, hammer, construction measuring tape, tool belt, marking pencil and/or utility knife); however, Habitat does not take responsibility for lost or damaged items.
Is there anything I can bring to the worksite to help HFHDC? If you want to contribute beyond your volunteer commitment, we’d greatly appreciate any items on our wishlist.
Do I need to pack my own lunch? Lunch is “on your own” for weekday build dates. We encourage individuals to pack a lunch. Coffee and water are available on the build site each day. Lunch is provided for most Saturday build days; for those Saturdays when lunch is not provided, you will be notified in advance. If you have special dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, or severe allergies, it is best to bring your own lunch along.
What should I wear to the worksite? We encourage volunteers to dress in layers. Please wear clothing that can get dirty, stained, etc. Heavy footwear is recommended. Closed toed shoes must be worn. No open-toed or high-heeled shoes are permitted.
Are there age restrictions for construction volunteers? Yes, you must be at least 16 years old to volunteer on the build site. 16 and 17 year olds must first obtain and file with HFHDC a written permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian. Individuals must be 18 years old to operate power tools and work at heights above six feet.
What does HFHDC do to ensure my safety on a worksite? The goal is for everyone to have a fun, rewarding, and SAFE experience. Safety is our #1 priority. It is important that everyone follow these rules while on the job site. Additional safety guidelines
Besides construction work, what else can I do as a volunteer? Other Habitat volunteer opportunities include: committee members (fundraising, family selection, etc.), office volunteers, green team (landscaping), warehouse volunteers, and lunch, snack and dessert providers.
